16. Andrew Jackson Toomey

BIRTH: Letter written 5 Jun 1913, from Wm A. Toomey (Neodesha, Kansas) to Mr Otto N. Toomey (Salt Lake City; Dear Nephew; Children of James Toomey and Elenor C. Socwell are Andrew Jackson Toomey, born 29 Dec 1856.

CENSUS: 1900, Colorado, Arapahoe County, ED 114, Sheet 7, Line 16. Andrew was born Dec 1855 and was 44 years old. He was born in Tennessee and is the head of the house hold. His wife is Eleanor and he had two children, O.
Norman, son and Hallie B. Daughter. His Father was born in Kentucky & his Mother in Indiana; Married 11 years; Can read, write, speaks English; They are renting a home and his occupation was Expressman.

LETTER: Written to Joseph Eldon Toomey, Feb 24 1938 by Andrew Jackson Toomey; Dear Grandson I will try to answere your request for events of my life. First a little boy in my little baby crib. I woke up early in the morning my crib
soaking wet. Mother gave me a spanking which did me no good I needed a doctor. My father owned a store on the turn pike in a little village called Antioch, dad called shakerag. We move on a farm on the ridge, a beautiful place plenty
of everything. Sold the farm moved to Glasgow, Ky on a farm raised tobacco and corn. Too many sinkholes. Water would come up out of the ground go 300 ft. sink in the ground. We lived 14 miles from Horsecave or Mamouth cave. Sold out, started west in 2 covered wagons and a fine trip we had. Stopped Sedalia, Mo. on a farm till winter was over. Moved to Empeoria, Kansas Bought 3 acres, Build a house south of town on the Cottonwood river, did I swim and dive in the river, yes plenty. Sold again moved to Neodesha went on an unimproved farm and grasshopper and chinche bugs ate every thing up. I got a job $12.00 a month took every cent of mony home for folks to get something to eat. Finally better crops. I was of age went to work on the railroad in the Flint hills then in Georgetown. Helped build the Loop, then to Denver. Learned to mold brick, molded for 12 years, machines took my job: Then in the Express business

OBITUARY: Andrew J. Toomey, who for 35 years operated an express stand at 19th and Stout sts., died yesterday at his home, 312 Garfield st., of a paralytic stroke. He was 82. Born 29 Dec 1858, in Kentucky, Mr Toomey lived in Nashville, Tenn., where his father built the first Tennessee statehouse, and in Chanute, Kan., before coming to Denver more than half a century ago. Mr Toomey was in charge of the blasting when the first road was built to Georgetown, Colo. Surviving are two children, Norman of Sandy, Utah & Mrs Hallie Finnell of Washington; 11 grandchildren & two great grandchildren. Funeral serviceswill be conducted by the Howard Mortuary. (Must have been Denver Colorado about 1940)

20. Holstein Monroe Warner Jr.

OBITUARY: Salt Lake Tribune, Wed. June 10, 1942, page 21. Rexburg Idaho; Holstein Monroe Warner, 75 died at his home here Sunday night following an illness of several months. Death was due to ailments insident to age. Mr Warner was born at Fillmore, Utah October, 29, 1866. He resided at Provo Utah, for a number of years and was married in that city to Mable Pratt in 1894. Mrs Warner preceded him in death. He had resided at Rexburg since 1917. He was a teacher at Ricks college for eight years. Survivors are three sons and two daughters, Adrian M. Warner of Denver, Harold M. Warner of Dillon Mont., Parker P. Warner of Washington D.C., Mrs Clarence L. Brown of Salt Lake City, and Mrs Karl Devenport (Hester) of Rexburg, a sister, Mrs Owen A Smoot of Provo, Utah and a sister-in-law, Mrs Orson D Campbell of Provo, also 12 grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2 P.M. in the Rexburg Second LDS ward chapel with Bishop H Lester Peterson officiating and Friday at 2 P.M. in the Provo First ward Chapel.

A second article in the same paper, same page; H. Monroe Warner states that he died at the home of Son Harold Warner in Dillon Montana. This is wrong. I Marcia Rose Warner am the daughter of Harold Monroe Warner of Dillon Montana and I know he died in Rexburg. I Marcia confirmed this with my cousin Karl Devenport (2 April 1997) and he said that Holstein died in their home in Rexburg, Idaho. This article states that he came to Provo Utah when a young man and was graduated from Brigham Young University. He taught school in Provo and then moved to Rexburg, where he taught school. He served an LDS Mission to Germany when he was a young man.

Hostein Monroe Warner died on the 23rd of May 1866 at the agfe of twenty-nine years. His onlyknown issue was a child named Hostein monroe (Jr.) born to Ann Dewsnip Warner.
Hostein Monroe Jr. remained in the Fillmore area where he held leadership roles itne Fillmore Ward Y.M.M.I.A. serving as 1st Counselor in1886-1997; and as 2nd counselor 1887-1888. Apparently, he movced with his mother and step-father to Provo at this time. hostein served a mission to Germany and also was graduated from Brigham Young University.
Holstein Monroe Jr. was married to Mable Pratt in1894 in Salt Lake City. The young couple settled in Provo where Holstein Monroe taught school until 1922. At this time, he moved his family to Rexburg, Idaho where he again sought and obtained a teaching position. This remained the family home. Mable Pratt Warner died in 1937 leaving Holstein a widower at the age of 71.
Holstein Monroe died at the age of 76 years on Sunday, June 7, 1942 in Rexburg Idaho at the home of Hester and Karl Devenport. His funeral in Rexburg was held on Wednesday, June 10 at 2 p.m. in Rexburg 2nd Ward chapel with Bishop H. Lester Peterson officiating. His body was then transported to Provo where a second service was conducted in Porvo on June 12, 1942. He as interred ing the Provo City Cemetery.
Hostein Monroe Warner II and Mable Pratt had several children. At the time of "Monroe's death, these children are listed as survivors: Sons: Harold M. Warner of Dillion, MT., Afrian P. Warner, Provo, UT.; Parker P. Warner of Washington DC, Daughters: Mrs. Thelma Brown of Salt Lake City, UT. and Mrs. Hester Devenport of Rexburg, Idaho. Phoebe Campbell Smoot, his sister is listed as living in Provo, Utah.

21. Hester Mabel Pratt

OBITUARY: Deseret News, Salt Lake City, Utah; Wed., 9 June 1937, Page 14. Mrs Mabel Warner; Rexburg, Idaho. Mrs Mabel P. Warner of Rexburg, Idaho, died at Rexburg Monday, June 7 (1937) She was born in Sugarhouse Ward, Salt Lake City, Oct 14, 1871, daughter of Moroni L. and Caroline Beebe Pratt and a grandaughter of Parley P. Pratt. Her early life was spent in Salt Lake CIty and Pleasant Grove. FOr 30 years she resided in Provo, moving to Rexburg in 1917. Surviving besides her husband are five childrn, Harold M. Warner, Dillon Mont., Mrs Thelma Brown, Salt Lake City; Adrian M. Warner, Kansas City Mo; Mrs Hester Devenport, Rexburg, Ida; and Parker P. Warner, Washington D.C.; Eleven grandchildren also survive. She was an active and ardent Church worker particularly in the Fremont Stake M.I.A.; was also active in the American Auxiliary, Dillon Civic Club and other organizations. Services will be held inRexburg Thursday at 1 P.M., in the Fourth Ward Chapel. The remains will be sent to Provo, Utah where a short service at the morturary will precede the interment at the City (Provo) cemetery, Friday afternoon.

OBITUARY: Salt Lake Tribune; Wed., Morning 9 June 1937, page 24. Provo, Utah. Mabel Pratt Warner, 65 wife of H.:M.Warner of Rexburg, Idaho, and former Provo resident died Monday at her home in Rexburg of anemia condition, according to word received here. She had been in ill health for some time. She was born October 14, 1871, in Salt Lake City, a daughter of Moroni L. and Caroline Beebe Pratt. When a young girl she moved to Provo with her parents and attended the public schools. She was among the first graduates of the Brigham Young University. She taught school here (Provo) and in different parts of Utah, Nevada & Idaho for many years. She was married in June, 1894, in Provo. They moved to Idaho in 1922, where they have since lived. Mrs Warner had served as city librarian at Rexburg since 1922. Surviving, besides her husband, are five sons and daughters; Harold Warner, Dillon, Mont.; Mrs. Themma W. Brown & Mrs Hester W. Davenport. Rexburg, Idaho; Adrian Warner, Chicago, Ill; Parker Warner, Washington D.C.; seven brothers and sisters, Irving L. Pratt, American Fork; Mrs Ethel B. Thomas and Carl M. Pratt, Salt Lake City; Mrs Olive P. Anderson; and Thornley O. Pratt, Los Angeles, Cal.; Parley P. Pratt, San Francisco, Cal.; & M. Lester Pratt, Kemmerer, Wyo. Funeral services will be conducted at Rexburg Thursday at 1 PM. Following the services the body will be brought to Provo, where additional services will be conducted Friday at 1:30 PM in the LDS First ward Chapel, with BIshop Walter P. Whitehead in charge. Burial will be in the Provo City burial park. Friends may call at the Deseret mortuary prior to services.
