2704. Charles Dickinson [Vestryman]

SOURCE: Data for the family of Charles Dickinson and Phillipa Greene are
taken from a FGRC Archive Record submitted by Mrs Louise D.Roberts, Route #2,
Box 30, Vernal, Utah, which lists:
- Updike "History of Narragansett Church" 11 p 314 & 386; - Greenes of Rhode Island 1 p 76 & 77.

NOTE: The above-referenced archive record gives Charles' parents as John
Dickinson and and Elizabeth Howland; however, it is not definitely known that
Charles was a member of this family. Note the following from an article
entitled "Dickinson Problems -- The Oyster Bay and Narragansett Families,"
by Donald Lines Jacobus in "The American Genealogist," Volume 21 (1946),
pp. 256-259:

"It was stated in 'Greenes of Rhode Island' (1903) that Charles Dickinson, Sr., was son of John and Elizabeth (Howland) Dickinson. This has been repeated in other printed sources, including 'The Mayflower Index.' If we are correct in identifying John and Elizabeth Dickinson of Oyster Bay, it
is impossible that Charles Dickinson can claim that parentage. Little is
seen in print on the Rhode Island Dickinsons, and further light is desired on the early history of this family, particularly any clues pointing to the origin of Charles Dickinson, Sr."

NOTE: The Ancestral File gives birth date as "abt 1654" and birth place as
Narragansett, Washington, Rhode Island.

NOTE: Charles was also baptized 23 Nov 1936 and endowed 15 Apr 1937.

NOTE: Per Patron Notification dated 28 Feb 1990, sealing of Charles to
parents and spouse is "In Process;" Reference Nos. F610071 and F500927. Also
cleared for sealing to spouse in the Seattle Temple.

NOTE: The following notes are copied verbatim from Amy Cardon Odell, 3433
Tice Creek Drive #1, Walnut Creek, CA 94595:
- Updike, History of Narragansett Church, II, 3124, 385; "Greens of Rhode
Island" I, 76-77;
- Charles Dickinson, vestryman of St. Paul's (Episcopal) Church, Easter
Monday 1730 (Updike, II, 500);
- April 14, 1718, Charles, vestryman, at same (I,461);
- 15 Jun 1718, John Dickinson and Mary Phillips were married by the Rev. Mr
Wm. Guy (Updike, II, 466);
- 28 May 1721, Mr. Charles Dickinson a communicant (Updike, II, 464);
- 16 May 1722, Mr. Charles Dickinson and Charles Dickinson, Jr., Vestryman
(Updike, II; Aw66);
- 15 Jul 1727, John Case of Town Hill was married to Phillipa Dickinson at
her father's house by ye Rev. James McSparren (Updike, II, 490); see also
pp. 42, 472-474, 476, 486-487, 492, 498, 500, 503, 505, 508, 512-513, 519, 561;
- 7 Aug 1731, Mr. Charles Dickinson and Mr. Phillip Case, sponsors for the
baptism of Samuel Curtis (Updike, II, 504);
- 27 Nov 1747, The Rev. Dr. MacSparren baptized at ye church of St. Paul
child named Mary Dickinson, daughter of Charles Dickinson, tortius, son of Charles, Jr., who is also the son of Charles Dickinson of Narragansett now living (Updike, II, 5190);
- 12 Sep 1740, Dr. MacSparran administered ye Eucharist to Mr. Charles
Dickinson on his death bed in the morning 2 a.m., died on the 14 on ye
15h, was buried in ye Church yard at St. Paul's Church in Narragansett, a sermon on ye occasion being preached by ye said Dr. MacSparren (Updike, II, 524);
- The wife and child #6 are both shown as Phillipa in some records.
- Charles Dickinson, Jr. was called Thomas at his baptism in the Episcopal
Church in Narragansett, 16 Aug 1726. There may also be a son, Richard, as
a child of this family, who was born before 3 Apr 1695.
- There may have been more than one Charles Dickinson in this same area; one is shown with a wife, Ruth, and another wife, Esther Gilbert. More
research is needed about these wives and about his parentage. We can
neither prove nor disprove whether or not he is the son of John Dickinson
and Elizabeth Howland (as of 1966 and later research), so must watch for
new records from Rhode Island to come to the Genealogical Society of Utah
Library.
- Charles' name was cleared to be sealed to John Dickinson as his father by
mistake. This relationship at this time cannot be verified. On 9 Apr
1991, in the Oakland Temple, Sealer Leland Wright sealed Charles to "his
father, John Dickinson and his mother, Elizabeth Howland." After the
sealing was completed, I told Elder Wright that this relationship was not
verified and that this sealing should not have been done. He told me that
the sealing would stand as he had performed it, and if it was correct, it
would be done, and if it was not correct, in time it would be corrected.
